Shunts and Aqueous Drainage Devices for the Treatment of Glaucoma
The American Medical Association (AMA) CPT Panel developed a new Category III CPT code, 0192T (Insertion of anterior segment aqueous drainage device, without extraocular reservoir, external approach), which will become effective July 1, 2008. The appropriate ICD-9 codes are 365.10 - 365.15, Open-angle glaucoma. The device used must be an FDA approved device for the procedure. CIGNA Government Services will begin allowing this procedure as of July 1, 2008.
Another similar procedure, Category III CPT code 0191T, Insertion of anterior segment aqueous drainage device, without extraocular reservoir; internal approach (effective 07/01/2008 ), is currently undergoing clinical trials and is considered experimental/investigative, and therefore, not covered by Medicare at this time.
